Praying for the Nations

The political scene has always been daunting. No matter which country you’re talking about, there isn’t a government without its problems because they are made up of flawed people like you and me. We are all flawed in one way or another.
Many people shy away from conversations about politics because it’s a controversial subject that causes conflict and debate. However, I hope to remind you of one very important principle that Jesus exemplified. Jesus used a whip and threw over tables in the temple because the merchants defiled the temple (Matthew 21:12-13). Then, in Matthew 12:34 he calls the Pharisees a brood of vipers because of the wickedness in their hearts. His words speak clearly about standing for righteousness and truth, straight from the heart. It doesn’t matter what the subject is. We should stand for righteousness and speak with truth and transparency. Hiding the truth is like hiding the light of Jesus under a bushel. Jesus would never let an opportunity pass when truth and righteousness could be revealed. In scripture, there are many examples of God providing wisdom and using people to influence the choices and direction of government. Esther, Daniel in the lion’s den, and the story of David and Goliath are just a few who come to mind.
I honor my country and I love that in Canada, Believers in Christ see our country as a place of refuge.  Our maple leaf is significant, reminding us that we can be a bridge that brings healing, when we speak Jesus to the nations.
While we dislike the conflict that comes with any topic, especially politics, always speak the truth and stand for righteousness. Our countries would be in a better place if our politicians could do this. For the sake of our country and those near and far to us, we pray for our leaders. Whether they realize it or not, may the hand of God guide them. We ask God to bring people of Godly influence and examples into our governments. We pray for revival. We pray for a great harvest of souls to know God’s love and salvation. We ask for courage so that our nation’s people stand for truth and righteousness. What is hidden in the dark will be exposed in the light as we stand united in Christ, for righteousness and speak truth in love. Amen. Luke 12:2-3

I may not agree with, or even particularly like, many political leaders – in my own country (Canada) or elsewhere. But they need to be prayed for, because I believe it is God who sets them in leadership – for His purposes. We may not understand it and the individual may seem at cross purposes with what we would like them to be doing, but God sees the big picture and, as with so many other aspects of life and the world today, I have to trust in Him. And as you say, Laurie, they need God’s guidance, and prayer covering.
